Tech Noob? Try Google’s Technical Support Fundamentals Course!
This time, let me share my review on Google’s Technical Support Fundamentals Course which is offered through Coursera.
If you are an absolute beginner to Information Technology then you are in luck because this blog post might help you to kick start your passion for computers! As usual, I’ll be talking about 3 different things. First, How much this course cost. Secondly, How is this course structured and what are you gonna learn if you take this course and finally, My recommendation on whether you should or shouldn’t take this course and how it helped me!
What actually is this course?
In this course, you’ll be introduced to the world of Information Technology, or IT. You’ll learn about the different facets of Information Technology, like computer hardware, the Internet, computer software, troubleshooting, and customer service. This course covers a wide variety of topics in IT that are designed to give you an overview of what’s to come in this certificate program. Oh! Oh! and this is the first course out of five to get the Google IT Support Professional Certificate!
How much this course cost?
Even though the course is offered by Google, it will not break the bank. So the course is $49/month. It’s not a flat fee or anything like that. Therefore if you can complete the course within a month it will only cost you $49 and if you take 10 months to complete it will cost you $490. The course itself recommends that you’ll be able to complete the entire course Approx. within 12 hours. Sweet! right?
What’s in it for you?
As I said earlier this course teaches the very basics of Infomation Technology. By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:
- Understand how the binary system works
- Assemble a computer from scratch
- Choose and install an operating system (Windows and Linux) on a computer
- Understand what the Internet is, how it works, and the impact it has in the modern world
- Learn how applications are created and how they work under the hood of a computer
- Utilize common problem-solving methodologies and soft skills in an Information Technology setting
Now let’s see how the course content looks like. Shall we? Oh, before that a meme?
So you have 6 different modules to follow in order to complete the course. Let me discuss those briefly.
Introduction to IT
This module can be completed within 4 hours. It has some of the very basics of computer science. Here you’ll learn about how computers were invented, how they’ve evolved over time, and how they work today. You’ll be able to touch on some binary calculations as well.
Hardware
It’ll take about 5 hours to complete this module and it’s all about what’s inside a computer. You’ll discover what each component does and how they work together to make a computer function. Also in the end you’ll be able to assemble a computer from scratch like a pro!
Operating System
Now in this one, you are diving into computer software. You’ll discuss the common operating systems that are used today and understand how they work with the computer hardware. You’ll learn about the “boot process” of an operating system and show you how to install Windows, Linux, and Mac OSX operating systems from scratch. It will take 6 hours to complete.
Networking
Networking is a crucial segment when it comes to computing. You’ll explore the history of the Internet and what “The Web” actually is and also discuss topics like Internet privacy, security, and what the future of the Internet may look like.
Software
Computer software, also called software, is a set of instructions and its documentation that tells a computer what to do or how to perform a task. The software includes all different software programs on a computer, such as applications and the operating system. By the end of this module, you’ll use the Qwiklabs environment to install, update, and remove software on both Windows and Linux operating systems.
Troubleshooting
This is the final module in this course. You’ll get to learn some of the real-world scenarios related to troubleshooting. Also, you’ll learn why troubleshooting is super important when working in the tech industry. It will only cost you around 3 hours to complete this module.
Oh, and along the way, you’ll get to work on lab sessions too! These labs are pretty fun and you’ll get a descriptive lab sheet when you are doing your assessments.
Do I recommend this?
It’s a tricky question because it depends on each other. Like, if you are an absolute beginner in the tech world I’d say this course will give you a kick start. But if you are an intermediate I don’t see a point of following this course. BUT if you wish to do the Google IT Support Professional Certificate! it is mandatory to complete this course. So it’s up to you! Anway the content is not boring at all. All the mentors present in the course are really fun.
So that’s a wrap for today! See you soon with another review. Take Care!
